State of the Union Address

State of the Union Address
David Schlecht

So what were your thoughts on President Obama’s State of the Union Address tonight? Here are a few of my thoughts:

  • High Speed Rail! It’s about time. This is a good goal. Of course those against America will oppose it.
  • Investing in innovations like solar is a good step if you can make sure you’re stimulating OUR economy.
  • Electric cars. Yeah!
  • No messing with Social Security
  • Make the rich pay their fair share
  • No comment on bringing our jobs home. Just chatter about how if we’re better educated we’ll be better able to compete (with dollar a day Chinese slave labor?)
  • No comment about busting up the too-big-to-fail banks or cleaning up our media or enforcing anti-trust regulations.

All in all, it was a motivating speech that was a little short on specifics, but full of lots of grand ideas.

  1. Cutting the budget that much will stall the economic recovery and he won’t get reelected. But, I agree, I liked the high speed rail.May they’ll all be a wash. He never addressed the root causes of our current mess.

  2. More important, he didn’t point out that the current mess was caused by the Conservatives’ failed ideals such as free trade, trickle down economics, tax give aways to the rich. If we can’t show America where the bad ideas are coming from, we will continue voting in the wrong people.

  3. He needed to talk about free trade and union busting in reference to destroying the economy.

  4. What’s with Boener and the stupid way he’s got his black and white ribbon? Is he still disrespecting Gabby? Real classy.

  5. My favorite line was that we need to start investing in tomorrow’s technology and quit subsidizing the fossil fuel industry. The Republicans almost peed their pants.

  6. I liked that they had the two parties sitting together. That’s what they’re supposed to be doing, working TOGETHER to fix this mess they have bestowed upon us.

  7. Well, the State of the Union address was important but what’s even more important is that I missed your “Are you ready for Christmas?” poll in December! Bummer.

Okay, seriously, about the State of the Union address … I hate to sound calloused, but I’ve always found the State of the Union address to be more a case of political blather than an actual springboard for action … no matter which party is in charge.

  8. “I’ll veto” any pork. Really? I doubt it. Congress can’t pass 100 times more bills because they can’t cram 100 earmarks into one bill.

  9. I hate to say it but he sounds like Carter with the solar panels on the White House. “Well never use more oil than we did in 1972.” That kind of war with the oil industry is part of why he was a one term president. Let’s hope the same doesn’t happen to this forward looking president.

  10. Wow, the Republican replies are pretty frightful. We have a very sick party on our hands here America.

  11. I loved it! Yes, my dear representative, America wants you to strengthen Social Security, not give it to the billionaire bankers to lose.
