The Commons and the Resources

The Commons and the Resources
by
David Schlecht

We’ve discussed the need to protect the commons in prior posts. Still, there are many people who don’t grasp the importance of protecting our commons. I’ll illustrate an important aspect of protecting the commons by looking at the crime of exploiting our resources for greed and profit.

In our example we’ll use the idea of exploiting oil even though this applies to all of our resources.

Let’s take the position that I am an oil tycoon and am spending millions of dollars each month to ensure that people continue to use my oil and continue to make billions of dollars in profit for me. Let’s say that I’m even pathological enough to discourage people from believing the catastrophic truth about the negative effects of using my products.

In 40 years I pass my empire on to my children and they pass it along to their children and on and on until it’s the year 2500 and every drop of oil is gone.

Along comes 2501 and the world is faced with a disaster that only oil can resolve.

What I have done as well as my children and grand children is steal the resources from our future children. I’ve taken something from the earth that belongs to every one of us and exploited it to make me stinkingly rich, here, now, today. I have taken the resources away from any future generation that may actually have a use for them that could help everyone.

We all need to start to expect that there should be restrictions on exploiting our non-renewable resources for greed and profit, expect that we would all find it important to protect our resources, especially the ones we can’t get back once they’re squandered.

Even renewable resources need to be protected. Our water supplies are renewable but no one should be allowed to make money by selling something that we all need to survive on this planet. This foolishness will only lead to a shortage of water while some have it all. It always comes to pass that those things that are in the most demand are owned, hoarded, exploited, and controlled by the wealthy.

Resources such as food or lumber are renewable but are also of limited quantity. There is only so much lumber we can grow and so much food.  Both of these must come from the earth which we are all responsible for. If we leave it up to the greedy to strip the land of all ability to grow food and lumber we will be allowing them to get rich while all the rest of us will have to deal with the barren, toxic wasteland the greedy will leave behind.

Sooner or later we will all begin to realize that we are all responsible for this earth we share. And the only way to be responsible for it and to protect it is to have reasonable limitations on how it can be exploited for profit.

Looking for a Leader

Looking for a Leader
Dave Speck

There’s an old joke, “Republicans want a leader, Democrats want a meeting.”

Jokes are seldom funny unless there’s a grain of truth to them.

Stop. Before you read any further, answer the question, do you think the joke is true about your political party?

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s get to the point.

Go find yourself a copy of the US constitution and find who is supposed to be the leader of the people. It’s a short and easy read. The president? Congress? But if you don’t want to go check it out for yourself, I’ll give you a clue. There isn’t one!

The framers of our constitution and the forefathers of our country didn’t want there to be leaders. It is We the People who is supposed to lead the government.

And, what’s the best way to lead the government? Through meetings, negotiations, and compromise.

Got that? The Republicans make lousy American politicians because they try to be leaders. Take George W. Bush as an example. He acted like a leader. A lousy leader with all the wrong and stupid ideas but the Republicans loved him. Why would Americans love a leader who did the damage that Bush did to America? Because they have the mistaken belief that they need a leader. That’s what makes it so easy for a strong leader with destructive ideas to become the leader of the Republicans.

America doesn’t elect leaders. If you’re electing a leader, you’re doing the thing that our founding fathers didn’t want you to do. Don’t be a follower. Be a leader and tell your REPRESENTATIVES what to do.

Dave Speck

The Reno Nevada group of #Occupy Wall Street, #Occupy Reno, is preparing to start occupying the closed Moana Pool area at 240 W. Moana Lane. The Reno mayor, Cashell, has met with the group and the city council has agreed to waive the $1,000 per month park fee.

Cashell says that the group need to also consider their elected national representatives in their disgust/anger for the current broken system.

The Banks are Still Ripping us Off

The Banks are Still Ripping us Off

Just last week Citigroup settled charges (without admitting or denying guilt) that it defrauded investors by selling them a package of mortgage-backed securities rife with mortgages it knew were likely to default, but didn’t disclose the hazard. It then bet against the package for its own benefit — earning fees of $34 million and net profits of at least $126 million. [Robert Reich]

They paid a paltry $285 million in penalties.

That’s nothing near as awful as B of A transferring their failing speculation commodities to their retail section because it’s FDIC insured; in other words, you and I have to pay up when their bad bets go sour.

The American banking industry is ruled by just a handful of banks so we’re still in an era of TOO BIG TO FAIL.

Taking Advantage of the Handicapped

Taking Advantage of the Handicapped
by
David Schlecht

I’m sure we all remember back in our school years and those few sick kids who would take advantage of the mentally handicapped by calling them names or telling jokes about them, just so they looked better.

We were young, indeed, when we learned that it was wrong to take advantage of the weak. We learned that there was something wrong with people who did that. We learned that it was a sign of weakness when someone had to capitalize on the indefensible.

Fear and Hatred are two of the strongest emotions that make us weak, that handicap us. If you’re afraid, it is so much more likely that you’ll make a mistake. The same goes for hatred. Some of us are just doing the best we can with what we’ve got and nobody has the right to take advantage of us. No one!

But, there is an organization that is out there every single day trying to take advantage of the weak and the handicapped and even those who are too busy to pay attention. Are you being taken advantage of?

How are we being taken for a ride? What are the tricks? What are some examples? I’ll share the secrets with you.

The organization that is out there trying to make their lives better at our expense is using fear and hatred and just downright taking advantage of the naive, handicapped, or uneducated.

What examples of fear do you hear regularly? If you’re over 40, you remember the fear that was relentlessly fanned about the scary communists. Russia, the Soviet Union was the big scary monster in the dark. We even had drills to hide under our school desks in the event of a raid. Regular fear sessions. Who was encouraging the fear? Who was fanning the flames of fear of the Soviets?

Then came the Muslims. The same organization ran out of the fear when the Soviet Union collapsed so they needed a new boogy man to fear. So, they started fanning the fear of Muslims. Now that bin Laden has been killed, they’re, again, running out of things to make us fear.

They make us fear the brown skinned Mexicans coming to steal our jobs. They make us fear the gays and the gay agenda. They make us fear teachers forcing our kids to be gay or want to do sex. They make us hate and fear the liberals, the commies, the fascists.  They make us fear that Obama is coming for our guns.

They make us believe that Obama doesn’t have a birth certificate so they can sow fear that our president is a secret Muslim. They make us believe that Obama wasn’t born in America and fear that  we have an illegitimate president.

They make us fear and hate the blacks, the orientals, the hispanics, the Arabs.

Now, stop and think about all the bad things that I’ve been describing. How many of them are things we need to continue to fear? How many of them are manufactured by the Republican party to keep their voters uneducated and upset about the things they hate and fear?

The Republican party is making fools of every single Republican voter out there. If you don’t believe the lies, why do you vote for the liars? Why do you vote for the party that is taking advantage of the less educated among us? Why vote for the party that has to use hate and fear to get you to vote against your own best interests?

Are you a Republican? Are you waking up yet?

I know, the Democratic party is just as bad. At least that’s what we’re led to fear.

Clarence Thomas Thinks He’s King

Clarence Thomas Thinks He’s King
by
David Schlecht

We Americans all know that our government is rotten to the core. The number of good politicians is a tiny percentage of the body politic and the vast majority of the rest are doing their best to destroy America.

The mand who would be king

We’ve written about Clarence Thomas before. His crimes, big and small, are far above what any country should condone in a government.

There is finally starting to be efforts to bring the criminal Supreme Court judge to atone for his crimes. This is from the CREDO:

U.S. Representative Louise Slaughter is demanding that the Judicial Conference, an administrative arm of the court, uphold the Ethics in Government Act by referring Thomas’ apparent misdeeds to the Attorney General for further investigation.

It’s time we all signed up to make our voices heard. No Supreme Court judge is above the law. Law breakers do not belong in our government and we’re not going to put up with it anymore.

Sign up to have Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas investigated for his numerous crimes.

The Corruption of our History

The Corruption of our History
Matthew K.

During and after the Great Republican Depression of the 1930s, the right-wing fanatics were busy writing news articles and books about how it wasn’t their policies that caused the crash. When they were expelled from government and the liberals took over the government and cleaned up, the right-wing was busy explaining how the recovery was actually due to this that or the other thing, but definitely not due to the liberals. You even hear conservatives of today explaining how it wasn’t liberal policies that got us out of their depression but the war.

Someone needs to grab the corporate media, you know the so called liberal media, and force them to publish the truth. If the war solved the depression, then why aren’t our two wars making this the land of milk and honey? If putting people to work making war makes jobs, won’t putting people to work building our infrastructure going to be even a better stimulus? The media is against the 99% and it’s time we turned off the poisonous TV.

Here we are, today, with the Republicans refusing to do anything whatsoever to help America get out of this Republican Great Depression. Their excuse for shafting you and me is so that they can make Obama a one-term president. In other words, they’re selling the country down the tubes to make political points. It should be pretty obvious by now that the Republican party is not interested in helping America. Their only interests lie with the billionaires at the expense of all the rest of us, the other 99%.

Today, you see right-wing blog after blog after right-wing think tank, rewriting our current mess, just like they did during their last great depression. It’s all the liberal policies like helping our neighbors and demanding safe food and drugs that caused the mess.

It’s not a small crime to corrupt our history. If America can’t learn from our mistakes, because the Republicans are polluting our information, then we’ll never be able to avoid this in the future. We’ll come along and step in this same gopher hole again and again until we learn from it. Are we learning yet?

#OWS is now Occupy the Planet

#OWS is now Occupy the Planet
by
David Schlecht

The #Occupy Wall Street movement is now the Occupy the Planet with demonstrations all around the globe. The plight of the 99% is not limited to just the USA, it’s all around the globe. And, so are the demonstrators.

We are seeing occupations springing up all around the country and all around the world. Even here, in the heart of Republican insanity, we had 250 people demonstrating.

It’s just beginning and it is the best chance we 99% have of taking our country back from the greedy. Support your local occupiers. Show up. You are part of the 99%.

Beware the Liberal Media

Beware the Liberal Media
by
David Schlecht

It would be funny if it wasn’t so harmful to America just how wrong the lies of the “liberal media” really are. Our country’s media is owned, lock, stock and barrel by major corporations and they are all hell bent to destroy any chance the 99% have of saving our country from the greedy.

That’s because they are the greedy corporations. They share the same members of the boards of directors of the rest of the greedy corporations.

But, back to the media bias, even the Pew Research institute has determined that Obama receives four times more negative media than the Republicans.

How can Americans ever possibly make a good decision on their candidates when the media is out there trying to make imbeciles of them, and in the case of most republicans, succeeding?

Hey, why aren’t they still playing to the mentally deficient birthers? It’s probably not over, yet.

Who Are the 99%

by
Matthew K.

You ask, “Who Are the 99%?”

I’ll tell you who. It’s you and your parents and your children. It’s your neighbors, your teachers, your students. It’s the clerk in the grocery store and the nurse at the doctors. It’s everyone you know.

In short, it’s all of us. And it’s up to all of us to come together, right here, right now, and quit letting the 1% keep us fighting each other instead of fighting against their greed and thievery.

The top 1% now has half the country’s wealth. Half our wealth. They get richer and richer while we get poorer and poorer.

Our politicians say we 99% have to do with less so the 1% can do with more.

It’s got to stop. And it is! We are coming together. We’re all the 99%.

The 99% at the #Occupy Wall Street and around the country need our help. They need food and supplies. This will only make a difference if we 99% can help keep them on the streets. It’s better still if we get out in the streets of our own towns. But if you don’t have an occupation planned in your city, get one started. No one better than you to make the next step.

And. consider donating supplies and pizzas to the 99%ers on the streets.
