After reading PJ’s great post on America, a Christian Nation, I decided that the issue needs a little more meat on its bones. I read so many milquetoast essays explaining how America’s founding fathers weren’t Christian, how this country was born of The Enlightenment, how American morals came around long before Christianity, blah, blah, blah.
All of these essays miss the point. What are Christian Morals and do we really want a nation that practices those morals? Well, to risk being too simple, I state that Christian morals are defined in the Christian Bible. In fact, anyone who has read the Christian Bible knows that the Bible is to be interpreted word for word and is not open to interpretation and must be taken in its entirety. The Bible says so in black and white. There is no opportunity for even a fool to misunderstand what it means. The Bible ends with this warning:
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
So you either take the instruction manual for Christianity in its entirety or you don’t take it. You can’t pick and choose.
Maybe you don’t believe that, but you know that there are many Christians who do.
Why does this matter? Because Jesus was a teacher of the Old Testament. He never once said anything God did in the First Testament was wrong. He wouldn’t be Lord if he said God was wrong. And the God of the First Testament was a monster.
The Bible is full of morals: human ritual sacrifice, rape, incest, slavery, genocide, and abortion. Yes, God was big into abortion and demanded it of his followers. Next time you oppose abortion, you need to sit down and read the Bible and learn to embrace it as it’s prescribed in the Bible.
Sure, there are plenty of great and wonderful morals depicted in the Bible, but none of them started with Christianity. Morals are a fundamental part of the human mind and are required for any functioning society.
So, the only morals left are the abominations of the Christian Bible, and the only one that is part of America’s founding documents is slavery and we quickly learned that it’s a lousy thing, even if it’s condoned by Christians.
I can already hear the usual baseless argument about how the Old Testament doesn’t define Christianity, only the New Testament does. Well, if you really believe that, then you have never read the Bible. You are not to remove anything or add anything.
Following is a list of links showing the Christian morals in the Bible. I ask you, do these things reflect the founding of this country? Do we want a country founded on these morals?
You will frequently hear people arguing that all the reference in the Bible to “taking women” really only means they are taking them to the movies and then taking them as their unwilling wives, but that’s not rape. Anyone so blind as to argue this is unworthy of an audience.
The case of Rape in the Bible that most disgusts me is the story of Lot and his daughters. As the story goes, the girls got the father drunk and date raped him. But in the real world, we know how this stuff goes. You can put all the lip stick on this you want but there’s no way this is anything but a pig.
Is it not more believable and more likely that he got drunk and raped his daughters? And for them to conceive it must have happened repeatedly.
Again, Lot and his daughters is a sick perversion that is God’s way.
But the original conception of Adam and Eve requires incest. Incest was part of the entire plan or maybe God hadn’t thought about that part yet.
There are just too many references to even waste time quoting. However, if you feel you need references, leave a comment and I’ll gladly supply a list of links.
There are numerous references to genocide in God’s name. Check out Deuteronomy or Joshua.
In Numbers 5 there is a ritual designed to cause a miscarriage in a wife whose husband is jealous. That’s a pretty low bar for an abortion performed by the priest.
This is just a very short list of examples of Christian values. Not my country!
