What Is The American Dream?

What Is The American Dream?
by
David Schlecht

Since the days of Reagan, the American Dream has been recalibrated. We once believed that the American Dream was to live in a society that is upward mobile. In other words, to live in a society where you aren’t limited in life based on what class you were born into.

The Reagan years recalibrated the American Dream into getting as rich as you can regardless of who you have to hurt or destroy to make it. Greed became God. Even today, you hear of people pursuing a commercial theocracy. We went from being a “We” society to a “Me” society.

What is the American Dream today? What is your definition of the American Dream?

Seeing how the TV programs have changed in the past 30 years is a good indication of how much it has changed. We went from “Little House on the Prairie” and “All in the Family” and “Three’s Company” other middle class family programs to programs about the millionaires and billionaires like “Frazier” and “American Idol” and “The Apprentice”. Media has had a major NEGATIVE impact on our vision of the American Dream.

Umm, I’m just wondering … after I voted, it showed one category (the lowest one) as having a -1% vote. How can that be possible? Did I read it wrong?

Well, I guess ‘FREE TO SCREW MY EMPLOYEES” isn’t one of the options. ;-)

I’ve asked this question of many of my conservative friends and their first response is always to get rich, then they catch themselves. After wondering about the answer for a while only one of my conservative friends was even able to answer the question. The so called liberal media has done a great job of re-branding the American Dream into pure unhealthy greed.
